Swiss International Air Lines achieves world-first allergy friendly certification

Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) has become the first airline to achieve an allergy friendly certification, thanks to a number of changes to its on-board offering.

In partnership with the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation (ECARF), SWISS has developed targeted service solutions for passengers with allergies.

The airline is now offering lactose and gluten free food and drinks as part of its standard on-board dining options. This includes a lactose free version of the coffee cream and SWISS brand chocolate bar offered on all flights.

Travellers will also have the choice of other alternative bread and dairy products at all SWISS Lounges in Switzerland and passengers with allergies can order customised meals in any seating cabin on long-haul flights up to 24 hours before their departure.

In first class and business class, pillows with synthetic materials will be offered instead of the normal down filling. Toilets will have gentler soap included and any decorative flowers or air fresheners that might have the potential to irritate will no longer be used in the cabins.

"We have seen a steady increase over the past few years in our customers' need for an air travel environment that pays due regard to any allergic conditions," SWISS Head of Product & Services Frank Maier said.

"So we've been working with ECARF to provide a concrete response to these demands and make everyone's air travel experience as pleasant and problem-free as possible."
