Skytrax Award winners 2017

Virgin Australia has been awarded ‘Best Airline’ and ‘Best Airline Staff’ in Australia and the Pacific at the 2017 Skytrax World Airline Awards. Qatar Airways topped the global list, followed by Singapore Airlines, ANA All Nippon Airways and Emirates. Virgin Australia and Qantas ranked 13th and 15th overall respectively. Qantas won World’s Best Premium Economy Class and Best Premium Economy Seat, while alliance partner Emirates won best in-flight entertainment.

Emirates Smart Wallet

Emirates has launched a new Smart Wallet system. The move will see travellers able to use smartphones instead of passports at Dubai International Airport. Personal data, Emirates ID and passport information as well as e-gate card information will be built into the system, which aims to streamline passenger movements at the airport.

EU roaming charges

The European Union has scrapped roaming charges within the EU. The move means that travellers can purchase a local pre-paid SIM card in any EU country and use it to call, text and connect throughout the EU for the same price.


China Airlines Brisbane boost

China Airlines is upping the frequency of its Taipei-Brisbane-Auckland route. From December, the carrier will add three new weekly services, raising frequency to a daily operation.


Adina Melbourne Southbank

TFE hotels is opening a new Adina Apartment Hotel in Melbourne’s Southbank precinct. Construction of the 220-key Adina Apartment Hotel Melbourne Southbank will commence in 2018, with the property scheduled to open the following year.


Emirates wi-fi price hike

Emirates has increased its onboard wi-fi charges from 14 June. All travellers now receive 20MB of free access, double the previous allowance, after which a US$9.99 for 150MB or US$15.99 for 500MB charge will apply. Skywards members travelling in first or business continue to receive free wi-fi for the duration of their flight.


Hilton’s Curio China debut

Hilton Worldwide has debuted its Curio Collection in Greater China. The Sanya Yazhou Bay Resort, Curio Collection by Hilton features 267 rooms and a range of food and beverage options including a rooftop bar as well as a jogging track, fitness centre, swimming pool and tennis court. The property also boasts a range of meeting and event spaces, catering for up to 550 guests.
