Virgin ups BNE-LAX to daily

Virgin Australia is increasing the frequency of its Brisbane-Los Angeles route at the expense of its Melbourne-Los Angeles route. Melbourne services will cease on 25 October and from 26 October, the current four weekly flights from Brisbane will increase to a daily service operated on three-class B777 aircraft. The carrier’s Sydney-Los Angeles services will also increase to twice daily through its joint venture with Delta Air Lines. Departure times from Sydney will be changed to allow earlier arrival into Los Angeles.

More Choice Hotels 

Choice Hotels Australasia has added three new properties to its portfolio. The 35-room Kingsford Brisbane and the 128-room Ocean Resorts & Spa Hervey Bay have joined the group’s Ascend Hotel Collection and the Comfort Inn the Lodge Mudgee in NSW has joined the group's value range of accommodation.

Holiday Inn Express for Brisbane 

InterContinental Hotels Group has signed a franchise agreement for a new Brisbane hotel. The 226-room Holiday Inn Express hotel will be built in Wharf Street, Spring Hill, on the edge of the CBD. The property will offer complimentary wi-fi, complimentary breakfast, a self-service business centre, fitness centre and onsite parking.

Etihad Perth route open 

Etihad Airways’ Perth-Abu Dhabi route has commenced operations. It is the carrier’s fourth Australian port.

Airtrain e-ticket app 

Brisbane Airtrain has launched a new e-ticket app. The app enables passengers travelling between Brisbane Airport and the CBD (or vice versa) to pre-purchase tickets online. Passengers can scan the ticket barcode on their smart phone at the entry and exit to Airtrain stations. The app also includes timetable information for the next train departure from any station on the Airport and Gold Coast lines.

Qantas switches to Sky and Foxtel 

Qantas will no longer feature Channel 9 news bulletins on its in-flight entertainment due to a new partnership with Sky and Foxtel. From 1 November, Sky News’ new international Australian news service will offer multiple updates throughout the day on domestic and international flights as well. Passengers will also be able to access Foxtel’s library of entertainment programs and Fox Sports. The switch will nearly double the number of new release films and TV series available for viewing in-flight.

Sydney Airport’s T1 undergoing road upgrades 

Road upgrade works have started at Sydney Airport’s T1 International Terminal. Effective from 28 July, the car park entry on Cooks River Drive will be permanently closed as construction gets underway on a new centre road. Other planned works include the development of larger pick-up and drop-off zones. Parts of T1’s outdoor parking will also be fenced off in the coming months, with additional spaces made available in the nearby multi-storey car park stations.

Frasers' Brisbane debut

Frasers Hospitality plans will open a new property in Brisbane’s CBD next year. The 239-room Capri by Fraser Brisbane will be housed in a former office tower at 80 Albert Street. The new apartment hotel, which will feature a restaurant, indoor swimming pool and gym will be the company’s fourth property in Australia.
