Cathay Pacific awarded best airline for 2014

Cathay Pacific Airways was named the best all-round airline at this year's Skytrax 2014 World Airline Awards seeing off strong challenges from Qatar Airways and Singapore Airlines.

"Some airlines were very good in economy, others in luxury but Cathay Pacific Airways was top, or near the top, in all categories," Skytrax CEO Edward Plaisted said.

The World's Best Airlines in First Class were Singapore Airlines, ANA All Nippon Airways and Etihad Airways respectively. In a similar category the World's Best First Class Airline Lounges was awarded to Air France, Lufthansa and Cathay Pacific Airways.

The top airlines for Business Class were Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways and Singapore Airlines. In terms of business lounges Lufthansa was knocked out of second place by Turkish Airways, with Qatar Airways and Cathay Pacific Airways being awarded first and third respectively.

Alternatively, AirAsia was awarded the World's Best Low-Cost Airline for the sixth year in a row. AirAsia has grown from just two planes in 2002 to an airline that flies to 195 destinations, with more than 160 aircraft servicing the route. Air Asia X, Norwegian and Jetstar Airways rounded out the top four.

The Skytrax awards are awarded based on a customer satisfaction survey of both leisure and business travellers. Between August 2013 and May 2014, 18.85 million people from more than 105 nationalities took the survey. There were 245 surveys assessed, including small domestic airlines to large international carriers.
